How to Use the Medicare.gov Part D Plan Finder this AEP!
During Medicare Open Enrollment (AEP) from October 15 through December 7, you can potentially lower your costs by shopping your Part D plan (whether you have a stand alone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan).
I recommend using the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov to compare information about your costs, drug coverage, star ratings and more. You can log into your own Medicare.gov account or you can browse plans as a "guest".
- Go to Medicare.gov and click on "find plans now"
- Enter your zip code (choose county if prompted)
- Choose type of plan you are looking for (Medicare Advantage or Part D plan) - you can toggle between the two once your results populate
- Enter your drugs - name of medication, dosages, etc
- Choose your pharmacy - you can include mail order or other pharmacies so you can see the different pricing at different pharmacies
- Plans are filtered and listed by "lowest drug + premium costs" - this gives the best estimate of what your costs will be for the "rest of the year"
- Click "Plan Details" on a specific plan to see more details about specific medications, when you may/may not reach your deductible/coverage gap/catastrophic phase
- You can enroll directly from the Plan Finder by clicking "Enroll Now"
If a plan doesn't cover your specific medication, remember you can always talk to your provider about medication alternatives. You can also always call the Plan directly with questions.
